On the night of September 1st, the School for Peace was destroyed by fire. The worst fears of all village residents - and their friends and supporters throughout the world - were confirmed when police and insurance investigators confirmed the cause of the fire to be arson. The authorities have been unable to identify the culprits, and we must assume that a building which for forty years has housed the teaching of peace and has offered hope to over 70,000 graduates, was intentionally destroyed by those who prefer war and despair.

We are incredibly proud that the day after it was attacked, the School for Peace continued providing its programmes. It is fair to say that if the attackers' aim was to intimidate the village’s educators or slow their work, they failed. As the school’s then Director Dr Nava Sonnenschein said in the immediate aftermath, “what cannot be destroyed is the dream of a better society with equality, peace, and justice.”

Although the school has continued its work in temporary premises, it urgently needs a rebuilt, modern structure to house its vital programmes. We are delighted to say that plans for the new school have been finalised, by architects resident in the village. This ambitious project will not only house the school’s many programmes but will, it is hoped, function as a national hub for civil society organisations working for greater inclusion, equality, and peace in Israel.
